At least speaking for myself I develop on linux, and I know natio does on both linux and winblows--I mean!! windows... oops... so in short, you can rest assure it works on linux, just need to be sure your server complies with the reqs (like having php installed lol! )
Good to know. If you try to add this in the .htaccess file:
Header set Cache-Control "public"
Do you get an internal server error with just that?
Yes, 500 Internal server error.

Enabling module headers may be done in this way (Debian with Apache 2):
server:/# a2enmod headers
Enabling module headers.
Run '/etc/init.d/apache2 restart' to activate new configuration!
server:/# /etc/init.d/apache2 restart
Restarting web server: apache2.
a drop down list of our friends with checkboxes would be great, some of them may have long names thus would be difficult to type in their names. Maybe the list can be in groups like top list, friends , families and ability to add more groups. this way we wouldnt have to browse all their names if we have 100 or more friends. We can also send mass message to these particular groups if for example we want to invite for birthday party for our family groups only.
Exacly NEmO..., i whould like to have two fields one for the Fist name and the other one for the Last Name, and the Optiond to search/browse people using the A-Z option by Last Name, not only for your friends but for all member...Also Yes!! it will be nice to have a way to have step by step registration, take a look at this site www.sonico.com has alot of good stuff that we could or i hope implement on 2.0....

Regardless of the fact of reading it looks somewhat like face book and even though yes all the features are not up yet in this pre-demo still not what I expected...but everyone is entitled to there opinion even people who read or feel that they are the smartest individual posting in a topic like after reading this most people do...maybe we can focus more on V2 than internet jabbing
lol ya but it is so nice to code and have reference pages on the second one or even my music or a movie.
i have even had 2 separate browsers open at the same time one on each monitor one logged in as admin and the other as user or not logged in so i can see the changes i make with out logging out and in 500 times after i missed a period or something is to small or big.
Lol, i knowm an i keep seeing people, talking smack about it, is like read first then talk...lol I dont get it but i guess is just being newbie, i member does days.... lol
I've always been a fan of IPB myself, wasn't that free some while ago? I think they turned pay a few years ago or no?
& I agree, Like i said i liked fox's forums because they weren't a copy of other forums but they lacked severely in features.
Yeah a long time ago was free. InvisionFree is still free though. They also offer hosting and with it you get a free board for as long as you have hosting with them. Other than that you can get a board for:
One thing that amazes me is why anyone would buy VB after visiting their sales landing page? Totally lacking presentation for what's supposed to be a large company. Even free scripts have better presentation.
I just hope that if they do invest in the Fox forums this round that it has it's own identity and not modeled after vb and that if they do want to add some powerful tools that they take a look at other forums and evaluate some of the opportunities. I just feel that because they have been using vb for so long that they may not consider that.
hehe funny story Purefan I can imagine this... it's a bit like the same problem I had first to find a team and developers for our web 2.0 community project. When I came up with the idea to create a new network, most of them said "There is already facebook, there's no free place anymore for another network"... then again, after creating just a very simple registration form and usermanagement, I wanted to implement the friends system and other features, and they said "facebook already have this" ... "I don't think that it's worth to invest in something that already exists" ...
You can't believe how sick I was to hear such sentences when trying to find a team. The only people who really just did it and followed my ideas were the russians, so I joined their team to provide people a "better" alternative to facebook and all people joined our new network like there would be nothing else and they keep joining today, now 17 million users and it became the most successful website of Russia and Ukraine and the countries surround.
Of course, the media called us a "facebook clone", but we were already better. We came up with social features that facebook never had and we were advertisement free.
I quit working for this network of serveral reason, but most important reason for me was, that - althought it was planned and already 98% done - the russian management never did something for the European people, so, most of my friends outside Russia weren't able to join this network.
I'm someone who doesn't care if a community has only 10.000 users or 10.000.000 users, I simply want to provide an international network for my friends and their friends, where everyone may have fun and where they can easily connect with each other.
... but now I had the same problem again with finding developers who just believe in creating a new web 2.0 script, ... again, everyone said "there is already facebook" ..
I also own several vbulletin licences and it was fortuity that I saw Ziki posting a mod called "phpfox integration" .. I just took a look what the hell "phpfox" should be, and somehow it did sound interesting, so I searched for phpfox on the internet and I found the website. Wow a lot great features I thought, then I watched the 1.6 demo on the website and it was just boring because only "example" users with "example" pictures were in there.
Then I saw on the phpfox main page a link to the spanish/portuguese customer site www.conectados.com and I joined this community to see phpfox 1.6 "live and in action" .. I liked it a lot more than the official demo.
I still wasn't satisfied, because I couldn't take a look into the admin panel and into the source code, I wasn't sure if this script is modifiable enough for our own needs, so I did contact the support with my questions. Mostly, Anna did answer me and she always said "yes it's possible" to every question, but she gave me always links to non public parts to the forum and mods, etc.. and I couldn't proove or take a deeper look, so I (sorry) did download a nulled script of phpfox 1.6 to play a bit with it locally on my server. I loved it, but then I was sure we couldn't use it for our community because of some issues, one of them was the "real name / nickname" issue.. We have a lot members with non latin names and it is not personally to force someone to recall his name in latin letters, very bad when you want to be "social" because when you want to find an old classmate from Egypt or Moscow again, you'll not find him under a latin name... but then I've read the phpfox company blog where all the plans of phpfox 2.0 were written in and this gave me the hope that phpfox is on the right way to match many of the needed social parts and shortly after, the public alpha demo was released. I took a look into it and it made me sure that the upcoming script will be best thing out there to build a nice community with... a plattform for fun and for my friends. Although I know that it would be better to wait for the final version because the licence upgrade time is not long enough, I bought already a phpfox licence to support the actual development progress of phpfox 2.0 and I think it doesn't hurt that much to just renew the licence again to be allowed to use phpfox 2.0 final.
I see a lot potential in phpfox 2.0 and I hope to increase this potential with my ideas in the Feature Requests area here... =)
...
Okay sorry, long story,.. back to topic ^^
Regarding username vs full name, I really understand that some phpfox customers want to keep a nickname only because of anonymous or privacy reasons of their users.
In this case, I would simply rename the phrase "real name" to "nickname" or "display name" ... Then it wouldn't confuse the members.
I personally would wait until RC1 before I start developing any mods and/or themes. RC means the script is feature-locked and only bugfixes are written so then I can be sure that none of my work will be lost due to API changes or template engine changes.
Thats wise and every modder should be using the alpha version just to get very acquainted with how the script works, learn it very well so you can work easier later on, read the guidelines and Im sure you'll pick it up its actually much much easier than 1.6
only small drawback is the extra load it needs but with the cache system it shouldnt be such a hassle unless your members change their pictures every hour
Cant this be done via php and load them in real time? Wouldn't that make it so that there is no load to talk about? I'm curious to know why does everything have to goto site cache when no task cleanups are adjustable and wasting server space(based on 1.6 anyway)?
Can you explain to us how the cache system has been improved because in the current system it is constantly delivering old outdated info and I don't believe it's really working properly as it should. I have never with any software had to use a clear cache button so much just to see changes or updated content.
This is part of phpfox meta: <meta http-equiv="cache-control" content="no-cache" /> <meta http-equiv="expires" content="-1" /> <meta http-equiv="pragma" content="no-cache" /> Does it defeat the purpose of webcache? I don't understand how it really works if phpfox has no time management built in for users as well the server time it sits on could be up to 12 plus hours fwd/back than the users time so stale content can be that old and in some cases if I'm thinking correctly if your target members for example are in Brazil only and server is in brazil then the content is always fresh but will cause a load on server thus defeating point of webcache because they expire correct per the tags above?
I'm asking that you demostrate how this area has been improved. Right now I think that i and everyone else can validate that it currently performs far from ok.
But just incase this is about sql queries, wouldn't the info already be present and not require extra queries? Has or is the tables in the database been redone to better manage this so we can create a big mod that only uses one query instead of 20? More intell pleasee
Great nice crisp clean and simple code. and ya if the new css is layed out well all is good i have just not wanted to back through and redefine all the class' in 1.6
but going as far as reducing single char's that arnt needed omg just the thought of what else you have done...... i think i need some alone time lol
